Thinking about a career in real estate? Becoming a REALTOR® starts with the right education, continues with licensure, and leads to membership in the most trusted professional network in real estate. Follow these simple steps to launch your career, grow your expertise, and start helping Oklahomans buy, sell, and lease real estate with confidence.

1. Complete Your Pre-License Education

Before applying for a real estate license in Oklahoma, state law requires you to complete 90 hours of approved pre-license coursework. This foundational education prepares you for the real estate exam and helps you understand the basics of contracts, property law, ethics, and more. Once completed, you’ll be eligible to begin the background check, apply for a license, and schedule your exam.

Start with an approved course like this one you can purchase from VanEd, our education partner.

2. Obtain Your Real Estate License

After completing your coursework, your next step is to apply for a Provisional Sales Associate license through the Oklahoma Real Estate Commission (OREC). This process includes submitting your application, completing fingerprinting and a background check, and passing the Oklahoma real estate exam. OREC provides a helpful step-by-step guide to walk you through the licensing process from start to finish.

Learn more about the process directly from OREC.

3. Join the REALTOR® Association

Once licensed, you’ll need to join a local board of REALTORS® to gain access to tools, resources, and the strength of the REALTOR® brand through Oklahoma REALTORS® and the National Association of REALTORS®. Each member can choose which local board they would like to join, but if you have questions, your broker can help you choose the right board for you.

Find a list of the 17 local boards in Oklahoma, and their contact information.

4. Complete Your Post-License Education

As a new licensee, you’re required to complete 45 hours of post-license education within your first year to move from a provisional license to a full Sales Associate license. This coursework builds on your foundation and prepares you for long-term success in the industry. Our REALTOR® Institute program can help you meet this requirement while also setting you on the path toward advanced credentials.
